About Us

 Background:
The goal of the Academic College at Wingate is to train students to teach sports and physical education in schools from 1st to 12th grade. Students at the College are guided to formulate an independent educational-ethical worldview in the diverse areas that comprise physical education. They also engage in field experience and student teaching, and by the end of their studies are well equipped with the tools necessary for professional teaching.
Teacher education studies extend over three years, from the students’ sophomore to senior years at the College. In the sophomore and junior year basic principles of teaching are taught alongside practical experience and supportive guidance. The senior year is spent student teaching. The prospective teacher (resident) gains experience as a teacher with the support and guidance of a professional tutor.

Study Program:
Theoretical Program:
The theoretical curriculum includes methodology courses which provide students with the theoretical elements of education in general, and of specifically of physical education.  A student teaching workshop is given in the senior year which focuses on analyzing teaching events.

Field Experience Program:
During their sophomore and junior years, students visit schools for field experience in teacher training on a weekly basis. They teach physical education lessons under the guidance of an experienced teacher (mentor) and conduct guided and supervised observations of lessons. In addition, students attend a course on teaching applications aimed at consolidating and extending their understanding and experience of teaching and learning at school. In each of these years students spend two consecutive weeks as student teachers, to practice teaching on a daily basis.
