חיפוש מקורות נערך במאגרי המידע PubMed ,EBSCO עם מילות המפתח "yoga and cognition", "yoga and cognitive function".

The influence of yoga practice on cognitive function in people aged 60 years and above – A systematic review

M. Shenhar, S. Eilat-Adar

The aim of this systemic review is to evaluate the effect of yoga practice on cognitive function in people aged 60 years and older. A search of the terms “yoga and cognition”, and “yoga and cognitive function” was conducted in the PubMed and EBSCO databases. Out of 504 articles, six included randomized controlled trials, with 468 subjects meeting the inclusion criteria.  The length of intervention was between one and six months. Yoga methods that were researched were Hatha yoga (three articles), Trataka yoga (one article), and Iyengar yoga (one article). In one article the type of yoga practice was not mentioned. In four articles (with a total of 299 subjects) a significant improvement was shown in the ability to perform different cognitive functions following yoga practice, as compared to the control group. In two articles (with a total of 169 subjects) there was no significant improvement at the end of the study between groups, nor was there a difference within groups. It is difficult to formulate conclusive recommendations, as there are differences in the length of the studies, the type and duration of yoga practice, and the types of cognitive assessments. However, in four out of the six articles yoga improved cognitive function, whereas none of the articles reported worsening effects. Therefore, it appears that the recommendation to practice yoga as a means of improving cognitive function should be considered (2a) based on randomized controlled trials (level of proof A).

Descriptors: Yoga, cognition, elderly, clinical trials.
