Field Experience

 

 Field Experience (FE) in physical education in elementary, middle and secondary school

 

Background:

 

  • The aim of FE is to apply the principles taught in methodology to practical experience at school. Teaching takes place once a week at schools. In addition, students engage in two weeks of intensive teaching each year.During the first semester of the sophomore year, students gain practical teaching experience in grades 1 and 2.  During the second semester, experience is in grades 3-6. In the first semester of the third year, students undergo field experience in secondary schools, and in the second semester in middle school. In addition, students attend a college seminar on teaching applications.
  • The entire teacher training process endeavors to transmit effective teaching principles pertaining to planning, performance, reflection and evaluation.
Course aims:
Sophomore (Second) Year

Introduction to:

  • Applications of teaching and learning theories in physical education
  • Understanding the elementary school structure
  • Practicing and improving  various teaching skills and developing reflective skills
  • Developing didactic judgment in planning and producing instruction
  • Teaching experience in elementary school; planning and implementing school projects 
  • Gaining experience in making judgment during planning, production and evaluation, using a variety of reflective teaching tools developed by the education and physical education research community
  • Acquiring knowledge, tools and experience in teamwork and the collaborative production of projects in the school and in the community, as well as in annual and multi-annual curriculum work
  • Developing personal responsibility for professional behavior

Third Year
Advanced knowledge of:

  • Judgment in planning, production and evaluation using the many reflective teaching tools developed by the education and physical education research community
  • The use of observation tools for teaching quality control
  • The acquisition of tools and experience in teamwork and collaborative production of projects, in school and in the community, as well as in annual and multi-annual curriculum work
  • Developing personal responsibility for professional behavior
Practicum Curriculum

Sophomore (Second) Year

  • Practice in teaching skills, instruction and principles of teaching games
  • Introduction to teaching and familiarization with early childhood learners, grades 1 and 2
  • Subject instruction according to the early childhood curriculum  
  • Experience encompasses the following subjects: 
  1. movement education
  2. wellness education
  3. integration of basic movements in the child’s physical and social environment 
  • Familiarization with the school
  • Familiarization with learners, grades 3-6
  • Familiarization with the teaching materials
  • Lesson plains (as part of teaching units): goals and objectives, environmental setup and adapting learning activities
  • Planning instruction units according to curricula for grades 3-6

Third Year

 

  • Familiarization with the secondary and high school: the school's mission statement, teachers, physical education staff, administrative staff, student populations, school regulations and school aims
  • Data collection for planning instruction units and their implementation, with an emphasis on the following aspects:

 

  1. Gradual development of content knowledge (Rink, 2000)
  2. Lesson production by effective use of skills such as classroom organization and management, guidance, active learning, effective time management of lessons, giving feedback, teacher enthusiasm, creating a positive climate, giving opportunities to respond, and more
  3. Using observation pages to focus on a specific subject for gathering data and providing feedback to peers during field experience
  4. Recording and implementing  the reflective-practical processes of planning, production and evaluation through a procedural portfolio
  5. Planning and teaching an instructional unit on a social aspect
  6. Gradual development of content knowlege (Rink, 2000)
  7. Teamwork for planning and carrying out school initiatives and projects

Sequential teaching experience:

 

  1. Implementation of sequential instruction units: planning, production and evaluation
  2. Expanding involvement in the school community: extra-curricular activities, sports teams, school sports clubs, participation in teacher meetings, trips, parent-teacher days
  3. Acquiring knowledge in the physical education sciences and applying it regularly in practical lessons

 

  • Application of authentic evaluation tools in the process of teaching:
  1. Process evaluation and management
  2. Evaluation of learners' achievements
In the theoretical component of the program: Separate courses are given in the methodology of teaching physical education in elementary, middle and high school.
